I just watched The Proposition, which was an insanely good, gritty, violent and frankly awesome take on the western, on australia...I just loved it. The only problem is, there's no sequel and I really want more movies with that kind of energy and emotion.

Are there any westerns you would recommend that also have that gritty, brutal, realistic sense to them? Can you maybe provide a bit of a description rather than just listing? I'm new to the genre.

I love Westerns, but one of the best newer ones is Quigley Down Under. It's Tom Selleck who's hired as a gunman down in Australia. His employer wants him to kill the aboriginies and he switches sides and hangs out with this crazy woman. It's really good. And Tom Selleck is really handsome.

"The Outlaw Josey Wales" is one of the classic westerns, and you don't get much grittier. Clint Eastwood plays a farmer turned guerilla fighter for the Confederacy when Union soldiers kill his wife and son. The Civil War ends and, sick of fighting, he resolves to escape to Texas, where a lot of ex-Confederates fled after the war. He is relentlessly pursued. Along the way, he picks up an assortment of strays: two Native Americans; a girl and her grandmother kidnapped by bandits; and a skinny hound dog. They all need his protection. His new surrogate family is threatened by Commanche attack, and there is a dramatic scene where Josey offers his life for theirs, and succeeds in making peace with the Commanche chief.

The Searchers with John Wayne. Gritty, well acted, and dark for it's time. Not sure why Wayne didn't get an oscar for it. And by the way, Wayne says "That'll be the day." a few times in it. Legend has it Buddy Holly wrote his classic song after seeing it.

I would highly recommend the Unforgiven. It is a quality movie that does not pull any punches about the lifestyle and does not contain any cookie cutter heroes or villians.

It might be Clint Eastwoods greatest movie ever, and that of course is saying alot.

It also has Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman, Donald Sutherland among others.

Great Flick!
