Although batteries are better made now then they were before some of them still leak. so when a battery is dead it should be reomoved from the device do that it does not corrode the contacts if it happens to leak. if you leave a device for a long time even a new battery should be removed and only put in when needed because new batteries can leak as well

You should remove a dead battery from a flashlgiht or another device because it can leak acid, which can be extremly dangerous if touched, or ingested, or somehow gotten into the body. This is due to the deteriation of the battery. Also, on a more pratical note, one should remove the battery because if the object wants to be re-used new batteries must be re-placed, or else it won't operate functionally.

It will eventually corrode and open up and the acid stuff will come out and then that will destroy the flashlight, of course if it is something more expensive than a flash light, you wouldn't want to have to replace it..
