What is emo anyway??? and are you emo??

So at my school some people call themselves emo just because they cut themselves and wear all black and fishnets and all that stuff at hot topic, and they listen to rock.

This is just the stereotypical emo, though. Just like goths, geeks, preps, and all the other cultures, clicks, etc., there is a good variety of different types of them. Like there are goths that don't dress or look like a normal goth, not wearing all black or have a bunch of piercings (sister) or geeks, that love sports like jocks do.

Just keep this in mind. I have friends that are emo that don't really fit the discription in this link. I'm pretty sure that there are a lot of emos that don't buy all their clothes at thrift stores.

Also, not all emos cut themselves. Even if their poetry (which I find to be rather good) mentions it or talks about it.

What you just described sounds more like goth than emo.

emo is when you're always in a depressed or sad mood. never really happy, and you try to hide form the world. so they wear black and try not to bring too much attention to themselves. some emo's cut themselves because they think it feels good since it is the only pain they can control in there life. but no, im not emo. imma prep! w00t.

emo is basically divided into two catagories the "fashion emos" which are the emos that dress emo and then there are the "emotional emos" the ones that cut and such, both like a piticular kind of music and yes u can be both.

emo are stereotyped as guys and girls who wear tight dark pants, tight dark shirts (typically w/ band names), dark hair, probably streaked, in front of their eyes, love their music, and some even cut themselves. they have diaries and write dark poetry and have very dark feelings. many people at my school are emo-posers meaning the dress the part but act very very hyper and preppy and i see emo girls wear american eagle jeans. i am more emo then them. so maybe i am emo.

emo: a slang term used to classify a mid-west american punk sound, mid to late '90's. Characterized by bands like Cap-n-Jazz or Saves The Day.
Bad *** songs that usually turn out to be about girls not being very nice.
it was later used to classify anyone who liked that type of music. But as most boys are too insecure to admit to feelings, the term killed the genre.
and, yes, i am (shudder) 'emo', but a better term is 'indie kid'

truth is they are just sad kids. be nice to them. your fashions probably look dumb to someone else, and will definetely look dumb when you are older.

OOH OOH OHH!!!... I asked this question the other day!!... It is a cross betweek rock and punk. It is short for emotional. Dashboard Confessional and 30 Seconds to Mars were the examples given to me. The "emo" people listen to it and wallow in misery and like it.

You know, Emo *is* retarded. The fact that there is a genre of music known as "Emotional Music"? Why? All music is emotional! You can't tell me that the blues aren't emotional! Why do you think they are called the blues?! Because they are sad! And sadness is emotional!
