The password you are putting in is to access the ROUTER. There is a seperate option in your router. It is called a WEP key. You need to enable the use of a WEP key so that people have to have that 10 digit code in order to access your wireless network.. In regards to speed, G-with speed booster from linksys is good, and you should have 108 mbps G connections on both sides (router and computer).

Each router is going to work a little differently.

Get the router manual (if you still have it) or download it from the manufacturer's website.

In general, most wireless routers that I have used have a wireless security tab. On this tab, you can select the type of security (e.g. WPA) and generate a passcode.

Follow the instruction manual for correctly enabling the wireless security and then correctly configuring your computer to connect to your (now) secure network.

Geeeez, where is your documentation you got with the router ??? You are supposed to read it and if you have problems call the technical support people who know exactly what to do. You don't tell us the name of the router manufacturer or anything.

I talked to the Linksys people and secured my wireless network in about 30 minutes total.

To maximize speed, keep your devices close to the router.

check if the router has an IP address attached to it...my router has an IP address, nad when I try to log in without a password, it says "Protected Object" and won't let me. It depends on what router (make and model) you have.

You will need to configure your router, if ?I knew the brand name of your router ( linsys, D-link, netgear...) I could have tell you how to configure it.

Each router has a different way to configure.

Or better yet check the manual to find out how to configure it and make sure that WEP is enable.

Good luck
