USB has max speed of 10 mbps, but ethernet ( by defaulf is 100 mbps )

It is definitely THE best idea to change your modem so that you can use the Ethernet connection.

Does your modem have a USB cable? If so, use it.

Otherwise, if you have a comotuer that is always on and stationary, you can connect to your computer via the USB cable, then run an ethernet cable from your computer to the router (or hub or switch); then use thet computer that is on as a conduit to share the internet connection.

Windows has a wizard to help you.

The person before me is wrong, USB 1.0 is 11 MB/S, USB 2.0 is greater than 400 MB/S.

Either way, there is litte chance you modem is bringig down greater than 10mb/s anyways. So that is not a concern.

You first have to solve getting the computer to talk to the modem on the ethernet cable by setting up a network on the computer, using the Network Wizard in XP is one way. Once you have the network set up, you can then setup your connections (use network connection.) [Caution: even though you think the modem is directly hooked to your computer, when the Wizard asks, the modem is on the network, not connected directly to a machine.] Then you can use a short cable to connect the router to the machine and the modem to the router. Read your directions about turning on the modem, then turning on the router, then turning on the computer.

One wire is going from the wall to the modem. The modem itself might want to have diverse ethernet ports. if so the different workstations might want to plug promptly into it. If no longer the prompt router might want to have diverse ethernet ports and also you should apply those. Get each little thing plugged in and then reset the modem and prompt router. you would possibly want to favor to do a ipconfig /launch and then a ipconfig /renew from the run or command instantaneous on the workstations/laptops.

What type of modem do you have? They all aren't the same. Moreover, what type of router do you have? Generally you would take the LAN cable and connect it from the modem to the WAN port in the router. Then, you have to access the router via the LAN IP address of the "default gateway". Once you've set up your network, you should be able to access the internet.

You can get a USB to Ethernet adapter at Bust Buy for about $20. I bought one for my TIVO and it works fine.
