Comets sometimes have two tails...a dust and gas tail, and an ion tail. Althought both streams generally point away from the sun one of the tails sometimes is slightly offset from the other. Hence, comets with that feature have two separate tails.
When the position of a comet, the sun, and the Earth are just right, the tail of a comet (which can fan out, instead of being a discrete stream) can appear behind the coma of a comet on the sun-facing side (the tail appearing as such is many millions of miles behind the coma) and looks like a spike emanating from the coma.
