Covalent bonding is a description of chemical bonding that is characterized by the sharing of pairs of electrons between atoms (usually between non - metal elements)

Ionic bonds are a type of chemical bond based on electrostatic forces between two oppositely-charged ions. In ionic bond formation, a metal donates an electron, due to a low electronegativity to form a positive ion or cation (usually between a metal element and non - metal one)

Look at the electronegativity differences between the elements which make up the compound. If the difference is greater than ~1.7 (this number isn't exact, but it is a general guideline), then the bond is ionic. Anything less is covalent.

most ionic bonds can be tested by using water & they also have a lower BP & MP due to the weaker intermolecular bonds
