Well, what kind of shape are you in right now??

If you are just starting out and it is the start of the season, the work outs you will get at practice will slowly build your endurance. It will also depend on what you will focus on (which stroke(s), sprints, distance).

Good general tone and muscle building is always a good start. Also, lots of cardio. If you don't have a good cardio base, build it up, it will be so much easier no matter what your focus will be in swimming. Pick a cardio activity that you can build on (time yourself on a treadmil or eliptical, increase at regular intervals). As far as the muscles, the shoulders take a huge beating, so take the time to work your upper body with either machines or free weights. focusing on the upper back, shoulders, biceps and triceps.

And of course, swim! Have your coach take a look at all your strokes so he/she can make sure you are doing it properly or what you need to work on. It's no use to practice in poor form just to have to fix a bad habit.

sit ups are good if you are planning to work on butterfly as your stroke but sit ups will help you in all the strokes anyways but the hardest thing to adapt to a pool is holding your breath so it might sound stupid but you should just practice holding your breath

Good Luck!!!
