Why do we never hear of them? I have never heard of them before until I saw them on the map. Who lives there? Are they used for military bases? What is their political status? Do they have governments? Can they vote? Thank you for quenching my curiousity!

Kingman Reef and Palmyra have no population. They are governed by the US as an unincorporated territory and administered by the US Navy.

Palmyra is owned by the Nature Conservancy and was designated as the Palmyra Atoll National Wildlife Refuge in 2001.

Nobody lives there; that's why we don't hear much about them. But in its early days, Pan Am ran a flying boat service which landed at Kingman Reef.
