say you are 82, you have 2 sisters but your nephews rarely come and visit you, they are very busy with own life, you have a very good young friends (50 years younger than you), who helped you out alots, visited you in hosiptal everyday, drove you around to farms and mountains, brought you food, should you give assets to blood relatives or helpful young friend?

If it was me, not saying should take me advice but...

I would probably give the family looms if any or anything of family sentiment to the uncaring nephews.
The rest I would give to caring friends.

The reason I say this is, maybe your nephews might not appreciate you and not caring, but their children or their chidren's children might want different. It would be nice if your nephews or their children pass a family heirloom down the line.

Family things would not really mean as much to caring friends as much.

Speaking of experience, I wish my Great Aunt passed down some of the family heirlooms and photos.
It wasn't my fault my mother and grandmother didn't visit her as much and I could only visit her if family were travelling to her city. (I was young at the time)
I loved her dearly and have good memories. I so wished I was given just one thing from her to remind me of her.
I hope I have made sense out of this, hard to write it down.
Go with your heart though :)
I

Personally I'd give my assets to my friend that has helped me. The friend has been there for you, and I'm sure wouldn't expect it, and therefore appreciate it more than the nephews.

if you give you stuff to your uncaring realatives, are they really going to care that you died? no, they will just care that you gave them your fortune. they wont ever stop and say, my uncle was a great guy, i wish i gave him some more time. if your friend cares about you alot, then give it to them, they will always love you no matter what you give them, they will miss you and thank you for everything you've done for them. friends are a very important asset. good luck.

I would choose the caring friend over uncaring nephews.

Although, I might feel differently if you said you had children.

Do what makes you feel good. If you can't decide you can divide your assets in the porportions you feel right about and assign the portions to whom ever you like.
