I used to be a multi millionaire..then I got stupid and now I am not..In fact money is tight..I have never been happier. My belief is that it is important to have enough material wealth to live a basic life with a few luxuries but wealth is not the key to happiness. Your thoughts?

I've seen some conflicting research on this...there are some that say money has an inverse relationship to happiness.

"In one American study conducted in 1993, level of income was shown to have an inverse relation to happiness: The group whose income had declined was on the whole happier than the group whose income had increased. A soon-to-be-published review of the hundreds of studies on this subject corroborates the 1993 findings."

And then there was another one that I read that said that the amount of over-all money matters less than having just a little bit more than those around you: "relative income". So someone would be happier making $50,000/yr when everyone else is making $40,000/yr, than having everyone make $60,000/yr.

Personally, I go with the later study. When I was young and went to a school with 95% weathly children, I was much less happy than going to a school where I was closer to the middle of the income range.

As an adult, I do very well for myself...and I don't think that $15,000/year either way would do much for happiness (although more vacation time certainly would!). However, I more than have my needs met, and I help my family meet theirs (although there is some distance and I have to be careful as to how I help).
I have seen families stop talking to each other over estates. So in that respect, money seems to do more to divide families than bring them together.

If a person solely enjoys the happiness and vanity they can get from buying luxurios stuffs, they need money for support, thus, money will be their source of happiness and therefore a lot of money is necessary for them to be happy.
If someone treasures the fact that their talents being discovered and acclaimed, they would work hard to pursue their great goals rather than the money.Meaningful achievements are necessary for them to be happy.
For me, rich people, juz rich ppl, are not attractive at all. But for those who being rich because of the achievements they have garnered using their intelligence, I find them very attractive.

True happiness comes from inside. The more material possessions a person has the more responsibility he also has. Thus more stress. Wealth, fancy toys, and such can bring temporary feelings of enjoyment but not true happiness. Generally after a few weeks the new toy is boring and another new toy is needed to bring that surge of enjoyment. To know true happiness you must like yourself for who you are and not what you have.

Money is sooooo not necessary to be happy! I have an awesome family and wonderful friends, and I'm great. Money is necessary to some extent (food, warmth, a home....), but you don't need the feeling of wealth (in a dollar amount) to be happy. No way. That would be sick. I would be scared for America if all anyone worried about was how much money they had (just for the sake of having it, not for using to pay bills or anything).

Well love doesn't pay the bills either does happiness. So I believe you need enough money to live comfortably and like you said have a few luxuries. If you have everything you get bored and don't really appreciate anything. But it is nice when you don't have to worry about paying bills and treating yourself and your family to outings, nice clothes, lessons, sports and fun things.

I don't think that it is necessary, but it does help. If you are so rich and you have everything you want and you have no better purposes for your money that making a building with your name on it or giving it all to a hospital or chairity, then you are probably miserable and have too much money. If you have so little you can't pay your rent or house payment and can't feed your kids, you obviously don't have enough money and this can lead to stress and sadness. So there is a balance.

It sounds shallow, but I'm a relatively material person. I know what I like in life and I would probably be a little unhappy with\out the little luxuries and comforts I enjoy in my life right now. However what really makes me happiest are the good relationships I have with my friends, family, and other loved ones. Materials enhance one's life, but they are not what makes a person have a full and happy life.

Having alot of money doesnt make you happy.. Yes its nice to have. But it can cause so much problems if you dont know how to handle it. I would rather have enough money to get by and live comfortably. Money is the root of all evil...

How many times have
You heard someone say
If I had his money
I could do things my way

But little they know
That it's so hard to find
One rich man in ten
With a satisfied mind

Once I was waitin'
In fortune and fame
Everything that I dreamed for
To get a start in life's game

Then suddenly it happened
I lost every dime
But I'm richer by far
With a satisfied mind

Money can't buy back
Your youth when you're old
Or a friend when you're lonely
Or a love that's grown cold

The wealthiest person
Is a pauper at times
Compared to the man
With a satisfied mind

When my life has ended
And my time has run out
My friends and my loved ones
I'll leave there's no doubt

But one thing's for certain
When it comes my time
I'll leave this old world
With a satisfied mind

How many times have
You heard someone say
If I had his money
I could do things my way

But little they know
That it's so hard to find
One rich man in ten
With a satisfied mind

its called satisfied mind by johnny cash.
the key to true happiness however, is living with Jesus Christ guiding your life. he can provide "a peace that surpasseth all understanding."

No, not really but that's not to say that we ALL could live entirely on a non-dependent life on money either, lol=P
What matters is to lead a decent not extravagant life, to have just a sufficient amount to be financially independent; living comfortably.
