Some of the music from Mexico sounds like it came directly out of a German beer garden. How and when did this happen?

Here's some hypotheses:

Proximity to Texas and exposure to styles in the area.

Influx of Germans at the end of the 19th century to northern Mexico (hence why the polka-like stuff is called Norteña).

In the 1860s, France invaded and put in a king who happened to be Austrian. Austrian (and thus German) culture thus entered Mexico, and the seeds of the music are thus planted.

Those seems like the most appropriate ideas.
