i typed in cmd into Run. i typed in ipconfig/release and this error message comes up:

The operation failed as no adapter is in a state permissable for this operation.

What gives?

under the tcp/ip properties, dchp is enabled. the automatic ip address thing is enabled as is the dns address thing.

when i doubleclicked on my connection, i went to the support tab and it says i was using an automatic private address...shouldnt this say dchp address?

i do have dsl and my network card is enabled.

Local IP and the IP your internet company gives you are two different things. The local IP is given to you from your router if you have DHCP enabled.
It shouldn't matter what local IP you have on your network. Whenever you do anything online, the IP your internet company gives you is the one that goes out. But if you're intent on changing your local IP with an enabled DHCP, go into your router settings and 'force' a certain MAC address (the MAC address of your computer adapter) to have a set IP.

HI

No , it means that the NIC card is administrative down , now , try this login as ADMINISTRATOR on your xp , and do the same thing , verify that your dsl dhcp is running the way it is . Last try this , unistall the nic card and re-install it , if not then boot into safe mode with networking support and give it a try to release the ip
