Hi:

First off:

Paper mache takes time but here what I do

1. Wrap the football in cling wrap. Cover all of it.

2. Tear your newpapers into strips or triangle shapes, you will need a lot of them
3. Using elmer's white glue, apply it to the strips or triangles and wrap them around the football until you got five layers made and allow it to dry over night

4) Then using a craft knife set it to the smallest blade opening and starting from the one of the pointed ends { Taking care not to cut the football} . Cut the Paper Mache to the other pointed end and continue alway around it until you returned to where you started cutting it. and remove the football from it.

5) Rejoin the cut pieces and apply five more layers of newpaper strips and allow it to dry over night

6) Paint your football Using sandpaper { starting with 100 grit and going to 500 grit)

Start sanding the football until you have a smooth surface then apply a coat of white latex paint ,allowing the coat to dry overnight and sand it down with the next girt of sand paper until you have a smooth surface apply some more white paint. allow to dry over night than repeat the sanding and the coating process until you finish with the 500 grit . Hopely by than the football will be a smooth surface. then paint it whatever color you want

paper mache will shrink and crack You could put plastic film on the foot ball in 2 sections then apply the paper mache Let dry till it can support its-self Remove from the football - The plastic film will help if you planned correctly Join the sections of the paper mache foot ball This will shrink at the same rate and should reasonably stable

We made a paper mache football at school and we blew up a balloon and did what iroc70 did but instead of using a football we used a balloon and once it was dried we made a hole on one side and burst the balloon and took it out, then glued back the piece we took off from the hole and painted it. It actually looked like a real football.
