If the fact that he plays for the yankees was irrelevant, then jeter would be my favorite player. It means something when a mets fan like me says that.
Lets face it-- there really is no better example of a team leader than derek jeter. He steps up in clutch situations and gets the job done. He does things the way it's supposed to be done. He wants to play the game not only to win, but to win convincingly. Remember the 9th inning of Game 7 of the 2001 World Series on the play where Rivera threw the ball into center field? Derek Jeter was upended by the runner on first base and was hurt. He refused to come out of the game, because of the circumstances. He refused to let a potential injury take him oout of one of his biggest games. That to me is impressive.
He is also the best example of a team leader in baseball. He has set an example to all the players on what it means to win, and that's on what is arguably the best all-around team in baseball (despite the fact most were bought). He is the most dependable player in baseball. You ask him to slap a single through the hole and he'll do it. You ask him to coax a walk out of a pitcher and he'll do it. You ask him to steal 2nd or 3rd at the best time and he'll do it. And so on and so forth. He wants to win the world series but he doesn't wanna do it by himself, he wants to do it with the team. That's why Derek Jeter is my favorite player.

I like Jeter. He is a great shortstop, the best in Yankees history. I hope he retires as a Yankee and he played a huge role in the Yankees success. However, I can't say that he is my favorite Yankee. That will have to go to Don Mattingly. He was a batting champion and an MVP. He won 9 gold gloves. He has a .307 career batting average. Had he not suffered a back injury, he would have been a World Series Champion. All he had to do was play one more year. The back injury was the only thing that stopped Donnie Baseball from being a World Champion and even a Hall of Famer. People always have good things to say about him. He never said a bad thing about anyone. He was one of a few maybe the only Yankee to have never been booed at Yankee Stadium. Even despite the fact that he suffered his back injury, he still gave more than 100% in every game he played in, and his love for the game never stopped until his retirement. Seeing Donnie Baseball hit the home run in the 1995 A.L.D.S. against the Seattle Mariners, was one of the greatest moments I have ever seen in baeball. In his last at-bat in the playoffs and in his career, he hit a double. On the plane ride home from Seattle which was described as a "Flying Funeral" Donnie Baseball announced his retirement. I was very sad when I found out he retired. People were even crying when they heard him say it. Donnie was loved by many Yankee fans. His number #23 was retired in 1997. Michael Kay, the YES Network play by play announcer says, "Don Mattingly might be the most revered athlete in New York history." Suzyn Waldman said that, "Don Mattingly is the type of person that you would want your father, son, nephew, grandson, uncle, grandfather, brother or cousin to be like." Donnie Baseball will always be my favorite Yankee.

He's not my favorite player. But, he is the player that I respect the most. In a city where everyone is only caring about themselves and money, Jeter looks out for his team and works his butt off every game. He's a true team leader.

how can you not love mr baseball? every fan would love to have him on their team, but despises him in the other dugout. clutch superstar.. as for defending arod.. arod needs to just play ball and dereks place isnt to defend arod...remember arod has had alot of rotten comments directed at jeter before his arrival. i wouldnt of defended him either. ps most of the yankees were aquired by trades or farm system. during the 4 championship years only john wetteland was a free agent.. also these days everybody buys everybody. but when the yankees do it its unfair.. still nobody complains when george writes that hundred million check every year for the luxury tax because some teams cant make money like he can.

he cares more about his hair than his team, example: the whole A-Rod fiasco, where was Jeter then? nowhere, bc he's not a leader, he's an over rated player on a sissy team
