use 1/2" diameter tubing to siphon debris from the gravel into a large bucket or container. you should hold the tubing end about an inch above the gravel and control the flow with your index finger. do not push the gravel around as this will release deadly ammonia. make sure your tubing is long enough to be lower than the bottom of the tank bottom. This is the easiest & fastest method. I've used it for more than 40 years....easy.....P.S. a gravel vacuum takes too long and is not very efficient:it releases ammonia from the gravel.

I suggest using a gravel vaccum. These are not expensive and can be bought at all pet stores and aquariums. It's a bit hard to explain but ask the shop owner how to use it and he/she will give you an easy approach. Use this vacuum whenever you want, whenever you see poo or if the water is a bit cloudy {due to poo trapped in gravel.} Good luck.
