I started playing guitar and writing music in high school so it's definetly not too late. All I can really say is that it takes a lot of dedication and passion to learn an instrument, and that gets harder when you get older so now is the best time to pick something up and learn it!

no way is it too late, im a junior and I just started guitar last summer, im picking it up very quickly but i did play piano for 7 years. If you put in the time you can do it. Lessons are a big help as well.

just a fun fact relating to this...Both guitarists in the band My Chemical Romance didnt pick up guitar until high school and look where they are today

You could have a talk with the music instructor about what you might be able to do. I know when I was in high school, they had a requirement of 2 years piano experience to play percussion (dunno if all schools are like that). A lot of school bands need more members, so it wouldn't hurt to ask. =)
