There are a number of polishing compounds you can use, like chrome polish from your auto parts store, or silverware polish. After you've got the fixtures shiny again, wash them very thoroughly to get off any residual polish and oil film. Then mask everything off and spray a clear varnish or lacquer on the fixtures. I prefer lacquer because it is very hard and dries quickly. Give it at least four light coats. If you can't find a clear lacquer spray at Home Depot, you might look in the yellow pages for an automotive paint distributor. They may have a spray can of clear lacquer for touchup work.
