You have to make the denominator of all the fractions equal so you can add them together. This means Mark grew 2 8/16 inches, Tom 1 12/16 inches and Brendan 1 1/16 inches. You can now add the numerators together (and don't forget to add the whole numbers too) = 4 and 21/16 or 5 and 5/16 inches total growth.

I got 5 and 5/16 inches. add the whole numbers together, then change them al to the 16th's. that would become 2 8/16, 1 12/16, and 1 1/16. Add the numerator of the fraction (the top number) this comes out to 4 and 21/16 including the whole numbers. then change it into a proper fraction being 5 5/16!
I hope you used mine and it is correct! but dont sweat it if you get it wrong. I mean its 1 problem right?

2 1/2 = 2 24/48

1 3/4 = 1 36/48

1 1/16 = 1 3/48

2 24/48 + 1 36/48 + 1 3/48 = 4 63/48 = 5 15/48 inches
