GO TO THE FOSTER AND SMITH WEBSITE OR GET A CATALOG. SEARCH FOSTER AND SMITH ON YAHOO TO GET THE SITE. THEY HAVE A PRODUCT CALLED ARAGAMILK. IT ADDS CALCIUM TO ALL MY TANKS. YOU CAN NOT OVERDOSE AND IT DOESN'T AFFECT PH. IT IS VERY HELPFUL FOR SNAILS AND OTHER SHELLED BEINGS. GOOD LUCK. IT IS PRETTY CHEAP, TOO.

My roommate keeps a bit of coral in some of her tanks to add to the hardness of the water, and also to add calcium. The coral is just a dead piece of coral that you can buy at a petstore, or I think they even sell crushed coral. Our is a freshwater aquarium as well, so you shouldn't have any trouble with it, unless the fish don't like hard water.

If you are keeping Rift Lake Cichlids, then use crushed coral for a substrate,if the water is too soft.If the water is very soft crushed coral might benefit livebearers. Most other fish do OK in soft water.-----PeeTee

You odn't necessarily need to, unless you've tested the water and it needs to be harder. Most fish don't require that.
