Nice question....and the answer is, no, there is no "dress code" for poetry readings. Unless, of course, it's being done in a museum, or something like that.
If you're talking about a poetry reading at a college, or a local coffeehouse, then go as you please. Have a little respect for the poets and don't look like a scrub, but, be yourself. I guarantee that you'll feel better in clothes you like, wear normally and feel good in. If you try to "dress" then all thats going to happen is you'll feel so uncomfortable that you won't enjoy it...and that would be a shame.

It depends on where it is being held. You should dress according to the standards of that establishment. If it's in a casual environment, then dress casually. If it's at an art gallery or upscale eatery, then dress up a bit more.
If you wear jeans, you could add a jacket and tailored shirt to dress it up.
Just remember this cardinal rule: never wear white athletic socks with sandals!
