Always shoes off at the door. My house everyone takes their shoes off when they come inside. I don't like dirty shoes on my floors. Whenever people come over they usually ask or automatically take off their shoes so it is never a real problem. Most people that I know and are friends with have a no shoes house as well. So they are used to being in socks around the house anyway. Kids invite friends over my daughter will usually just take their shoes off and thier friend will follow or she will tell them "you have to take your shoes off in my house, it's my mom's rule." I love the no shoes rule it keeps the home so much cleaner.

I live in a brand new neighborhood and everyone has the same rule. No shoes on the new carpet. Especially with the winters we get. 10+ feet of snow in the winter. I wouldn't want that slushy, muddy stuff being tracked into my house. I prefer shoes off anyway. I love slipping into soft, cuddly socks or slippers.
OK, time for my personal rant. People, if your going to do the shoes off thing, please make sure your heels don't look like you need an antifungal. If they do, please keep your shoes on even if you come to my house and there's 10' of snow outside.

Off as soon as I get to the bench where my Nice fuzzy slippers are kept. Hardwood floors and new tile. Plus let's face it I hate washing floors, so the less I have to the better. actually have a sign next to my door that says "Life is made of choices..take off your shoes...or scrub the floor" has a shoe horn attached lol. I never have guest remove their shoes, that would be rude.

I take them off-in the summer I stay barefoot in the house and in the winter have a pair of warm house slippers by the door to put on as I remove my outdoor shoes.

Off - I hate wearing shoes.
I leave it up to guests as to whether they want them on or off.
