It is not your "duty as a human being to save another human being even it costs my live". That's why on airplanes they tell you to put on your oxygen mask first before helping children with their masks. If you're dead then you are no help to anyone and two dead bodies are twice as tragic. Jumping off a 3rd story balcony isn't going to contribute in any way to helping the dropped baby. Besides if that really happpened the baby wouldn't look real, it would look like a doll. Would you risk your life for a doll?

In theory it is very humane to attempt to save the baby. However, if a baby is dropped 17 stories there is virtually no way that a human being could save it unless they had special equipment (like a net, gigantic inflated airbag or a portable jet pack) available. Those things really wouldn't fit onto a typical balcony. Even if the baby fell directly into your arms the velocity at which it is traveling is so great that the bones in its body would fracture. It's little spine would snap like a toothpick.

In a more realistic hypothetical situation my answer would be different but in this particular one that baby is pretty much doomed.

Well it's almost a given Yes. You have to say yes or else you're - well - just creepy.

But self presevation comes into play too. If it cost me my life, then I'd have to feel that urge and reasonable odds of success at that time to proceed.

Would I jump off a building - knowing both me and the baby would die regardless of whether I caught the baby - probably not.

After a second thought I realized that the baby is already dead - no matter what anyone did. A 17 story fall would give the baby a free fall momentum, that if someone tried to catch the baby it would probably rip the poor chaps arms off and pulverizes the baby.

The question then becomes academic - the baby dies no-matter what anyone does.

Of course I would try to save the baby. I have only lived for 17 years but the baby pretty haven't even started his or her life yet. I would risk my life to save the baby. It's the right thing to do.

Absolutely not. The baby is a goner at that point anyway. There's no way it could survive even if you caught it.

Besides, if the mother is such a dumbass that she would drop her kid from the 20th floor, chances are the kid would've grown up to be another dumbass who would repeat the process.

Dumbasses shouldn't breed.

It doesn't sound to me like that baby could be saved.

However, saying that, I must point out that many Christians believe that babies will be saved.

I'd like to think that I would if I thought I could.
Unfortunately though I think I might be in shock.

Also, sometimes these things happen too quickly for us to even register.

Why did she drop the baby?

Honestly I cannot imagine how you could physically save the child. If you were to jump, I imagine that you and the child would die or at least suffer severe injuries.

If there is a way to save the child then every effort should be made to do so.
