In some western countries I've heard corporal punishment, also known as spanking or smacking, is completely illegal and considered abuse or assault. However for thousands of years corporal punishment was widely used to discipline children in the in the home-and in school, in the military, and even as criminal punishment. It is still pervasive in Asia and the Middle East. Is corporal punishment a constructive way of enforcing discipline and deterring misbehavior in children and adults or does it encourage violence as a solution to problems and create mental problems? Have there been any independent studies?

I just saw this story on the news. In the Bay Area (San Francisco area, California) they are working on a bill that would make spanking illegal... now I'm not one for or against spanking. To each parent - his own - just don't beat your children! I don't spank my child as a form of everyday discipline, but I will tap that butt if needed....

I just think that alot of good parents will be caught up in this "law" if it does not set limitations or rules to define what spanking is or is not.

Is a swat on the butt a spanking? Is a firm grasp on the arm, which gets their attention more than a swat, a form of corporal punishment????

I think it's just too grey to make a law.

Should Corporal Punishment Be Illegal

corporal is practiced here in the Phils although there are some laws restricting it. I myself was undergone that when i was little. It was not as bad as it sounds though. Some children canot understand good reasoning for them to behave so a little pain has to be inflicted to remind them. But that does not mean im pro-corporal punishment or anything. My point is just to use it as a last resort for children and done very little. However there should be very strict rules as not to inflict it upon adults.

I don't know of any independent studies being done, surely there has. I am the only girl with 3 brothers, we all got spankings and as far as I know we are all normal.LOL The Bible states that if you spare the rod you spoil the child. That could be metaphorically speaking about not letting your kids get by with bad behavior and not neccessarily spanking them. Kids are different and different types of punishment works with different personalities.

i got spanked all the time when i was a child, and i now feel that i deserved ever last lick i got plus a few for the times that i didn't get caught.
it depends on the parents.
there is a difference between enforcing the consequences for a misbehavior--
(like spanking your child when he hits his little sister, this teaches a child responsibility for his/her actions)
--and arbitrary abuse. a parent who beats his or her child for little or no reason is heaping untold pain and confusion on the child.
that is why child abuse is illegal.

I dont think that it should be illegal. As long as the parent doesnt give any bruises when punishing the child then they will be fine. My mom spanked and smacked me when I was young and i came to be just fine.

DAMN RIGHT... half of the frick'n kids today wouldn't get into so much trouble if they knew MOM AND DAD were going to beat the crap out of them... same thing with at school...the little punks that get in trouble know..."nothings going to happen...a little yelling maybe" but WTF over...."I'll go tel HRS if you hit me" F That!
Beat them, let them know from the start YOU ARE THE BOSS...
Mental problems... get this, I respect my parents...and it's because I was taught right from wrong at an early age. This "time out" crap doesn't get you anywhere....source... we had 7 kids...and we're all are better off today, nobody has ever been to jail, nobody has ever had to go see the high School principle, everybody had a collage degree, nobody go on drugs... and it all has to do with GETTING a good A$$ BEATING as A CHILD.

Spare the rod and spoil the child. It is my profound belief that an occasional application of mahogany on the backside is a solid cure for ADD. Worked when I was a kid. Booster shots were occasionally needed.

I think a spanking, not beating never hurt any body.
I see some of these kids today that have never had one
and will never know right from wrong. Talking only goes so far.

YES THERE HAVE BEEN INDEPENDENT STUDIES DONE ON CORPORAL PUNISHMENT. YES IT SHOULD BE DEEMED ILLEGAL. IT SENDS A VERY NEGATIVE MESSAGE AND ALSO PROMOTES VIOLENCE.
