none of them had what we know as defensible archetecture, they all suffered terribly in quake areas and times. that what they did build was almost always destroyed.. horribly with ensuing loss of lives and structures.. they rebuilt in time as to erase the events of prior times japan is the leading one for theory, sometimes it works on a small scale, on a large scale, the results remain the same. ye olde greece is at the bottom of the seas(corsica was once part of the main land area)

In ancient Greece, there was no "protection" from earthquakes, nor was there such thing as earthquake proof architecture. Many civilizations were destroyed, rebuilt and destroyed again and again due to mainly earthquakes. Take for example, one of the most important civilizations/cities in ancient Greece...ancient Delphi. Built on the side of Mt.Parnassus, was destroyed due to earthquakes and was eventually buried under several meters of soil, erosion and earth for a thousand years until it was excavated in the late 1800's.
Some cities were lucky, geographically to be built in less earthquake-prone areas, but many other cities were lost due to earthquakes and some never again to see the glory of their former existence.
