To a COMPLETELY colorblind person.
(they only see black, white, and shades of gray)

Traditionally, color is described by feelings. Blue is cold. Red is warm. Green is cool. These are methods that have been used to describe color to the blind, so why not to a colorblind individual as well. Other attributes can be given as well, like green is cool and alive... it's soft like grass. Perhaps the shade of green makes a difference to your description. Pine green might be cool like a shady forest. Lime green would be vibrant, like sunlight, and as cool as seven up in summer.

Instead of using words I would take them out in nature and
let them feel color. Closing their eyes against the sun could
be yellow, listening to the waves at the sea could be blue,
feeling boughs of a tree, green, smelling lavender -violet,
eating an apple, red. They can experience "seeing color"
through their other senses as well this way. Whereas
we are stuck with the names others have given to these
colors, a colorblind person can pull on all of their imagination
to create their masterpiece.

I'd explain the electromagnetic spectrum to them and how there are many different wavelengths of energy. I'd point out that only a small range is visible to most humans. For example we don't see radio waves or microwaves or gamma rays. But we do see red, orange, yellow, green, blue indigo and violet. I'd then point out that what we call green has a wavelength of 600 nanometers (I think that is right for green...). It wouldn't be an artistically satisfying answer, but it is scientifically sound.

i wouldnt even bother explaining. Why would i want to deprive him of something? Just pretend like your colour blind too then maybe there would be a lot less problems in this world.
