Electric vehicles are not dead - there are dozens of choices - they can be bought, but suffer from a bad rap because of negative and untruthful information put into our culture by special interests.
*
Electric cars have many advantages. They are much cheaper to drive and maintain than typical cars, they can be 'fueled' at home, and they don't pollute (even if your powerplant burns dirty fuel, the amount of pollution generated is much less.)
*
Did you know an electric car can be had for as little as $5000? For this price you get a conversion - a gas car converted to electric. Cars like this look, handle, and accelerate like normal cars, and do freeway speeds, but have limited driving ranges. This is the kind of car I drive. More info here:

If you want a new technology electric car, here's an exciting one, coming out this year. It will go up to 250 miles on a charge, carries 5 people plus cargo, and can charge in only TEN MINUTES. This car is REAL and can be pre-ordered NOW. Info here:

The Phoenix will be expensive though. If you don't need to get on the freeway, you might like the Zap. It's a very fun vehicle that only costs $10,000.

I'll bet you've never heard of any of these cars. Popular culture, with help from the media and various interests, continues to propogate the myth that such cars are impossible. Join me - drive an impossible car!

The truth is quite simple, ask yourself, can it be a coincidence that not one of the car manufactures even today who make ev cars have made one that doesn't look disgusting. Bmw's ev is ugly as anything and bmw obviously have a history and reputation for aesthetic cars.
Also, there is more room to work with without the petrol engine so in theory they should be sexier, lighter and more aesthetic.
Ultimately, there is only one logical explanation. The car manufacturers do not want them to become popular and sell.
Even hyrbid cars look better (notice they have a combustion engine*
Why do you think the car company's were bailed out? Jobs? grow up. The oil company's obviously had huge profits to loose if petrol cars stop selling and they have about 90% of our governments on pay roll.
I also suspect Kennedy was assassinated for this reason (yes they had electric car technology then, actually we as a society have had the tech since the 1900's and indeed people used to drive electric cars back then.
Educate yourselves, Wake Up.

I agree that we are being conned with the hydrogen hype. I worked on the layout team at GM that developed the EV1 and it under no circumstances lived as much as the ensures that we had was hoping for. Now that battery technologies has enhanced it is closer to being what it exchange into meant to be, a commuter automobile. GM under no circumstances promoted the EV1 as a commuter automobile and merely tried to slip it in with all the different manufacturers it produced. whilst a number of the legislature began babbling approximately how electric vehicles at the instant are not completely pollutants loose by way of coal used to capacity the electrical powered dynamos no person stepped as much as point out that electric vehicles may be charged at night whilst the dynamos are shunting capacity to the floor by way of fact there is so little capacity utilization at night. you may't merely turn off a dynamo, then flick a change and turn it returned on. Charging an EV at night produces not greater greater suitable carbon dioxide than is being produced now, and whilst cleanser capacity of producing electrical energy are in use it is going to be even much less. As with something new there rumor mongers, con adult men (for and against) and incorrect information surrounding it. be reported and make your man or woman determination.

Too small a vehicle to carry more than 2 passengers comfortably. Battery design and development not up to the necessary techknowlogy of the era. Battery weight too great to propell the car up steep hills, and driving range on level ground too short to drive at about 70 miles per hour for one hour, maximum. Battery recharging time too long to accomplish with overnight 8-10 hours charge time. The fleet of EV-1 cars with all their up-to-date experimental equipment were leased and not sold to any of the potential owners. An interesting vehicle, never the less.

Cost and Politics.
Like it or not, the oil companies have their hands in the automotive cookie jar, so they have to look out for thier profits. Plus the technology was very expensive for GM to create and maintain. You have to give them credit for trying, but it just didn't workout then.
But fear not. Lookup the Chevrolet Volt. It's a modern Electric Car/Hybrid Concept from GM that looks rather promising. It can travel daily for 40 miles on electricity alone, and when the engine kicks over to gas, it can average 150 mpg. Don't believe me? Check it out yourself and you'll see.

Because society has complicated things that should be simple. I don't want to get into this, so I'll talk about the second factor.
There is a greedy profit in gasoline, even though it has a bad effect on the environment. No one wants to lose out on the money. That's the way it works. Society will always be greedy, and nothing will change that.

Because the one they made was a piece of crap. 20 mins of run time and 20 hours of charging. Oh and they get kick backs from the gas companys.
