My cd burner on my computer will burn a cd, but it won't read a cd. I have tons of stuff that I've saved on cd's, but I can't use any of it because my cd drive just won't read them anymore. So, instead of spending a lot of money on a new hard drive, I was wondering if I could buy an external cd drive. Does anyone know if that will work? It's not that I'm a cheapskate, I'm just on a budget and can't afford a new computer.

depends if the files actually burned to the cd in the first place. If the cd works in another computer's cd drive, it can be read in an external drive too. If you can't read it in a working cd drive on another computer then your burner never actually burned the data to the disc in the first place. You can buy an internal cd burner for about 30 bucks....External drives are usually more expensive, I would replace the internal drive- it only amounts to 4-8 screws(to open the case and un-screw the drive), 3 cables and a correct jumper setting. Instructions will most likely come with a new drive. Open the case and put in a new internal burner if your testing on a working cdrom proves that your cd drive is the culprit.

Have you tried the CDs in another computer to see if they can read them? I would suspect that is your CD drive is not reading CDs, it is also not properly burning them. If another CD drive can read them, then replacing your burner would probably fix the problem for you. (Replacing the internal burner is usually cheaper then buying an external drive).
