Because it's a huge ecosystem that sustains life to many different plants and animals. I do know that if the 'Glades were destroyed the Florida panther would become extinct along with a few other animals that only live in South Florida.

1. It supplies a home for MANY endangered animal and plant species. The alligator was once endangered, and the Everglades was a key part in bringing it back. 2. Many parts of the Everglades serve as a watershed/water source for big portions of cities like Miami. That is, we get some of our drinking water from there. 3. The Everglades helps the South Florida tourist industry, believe it or not. Part of that comes from the conservation park, the zoo, the water recreation, etc. that's indigenous to that area. That's a start. Why not Google it and look up s'more reasons.

Wetlands in general cleanse the environment of toxins. The Everglades also moderate flooding in the watersheds that drain into them (although in the 50s a lot of "swamps" were drained and rivers straightened, resulting it large fluctuations in waters levels, ie floods and dry streams).

taking care of all environment no matter which is important. maybe this one is specially important because i don't know, it was massively destructed or something like that
