Get your name on the mailing lists of book stores and libraries. Let the people there know that you are interested in being notified when there will be poetry readings.
Coming from New York, we used to go down to Greenwich Village every now and then. Many coffee shops had live poets--and sometimes there were shows with many of them.
Also, if you are not a student, you can ask the community college if they will have any readings that the public can attend. You could also take a course in poetry (beginning, intermediate or advanced).

depending on the city you live in, there are flyers/magazines that advertise the goings on for the city for a given week or month and are usually divided into categories...you should be able to find info in those...i live in memphis, tn and we have something called memphis flyer it tells of movies, concerts, clubs, poetry readings and interesting topics of discussion...wow all this and i am still bored in memphis...hhhmmm. anyhow if that does not help, check with local coffee shops and libraries, if it is not an active thing in your area, maybe you are the one that needs to initiate such a thing.
