As many as the production Co. care to keep "introducing" as survivors, even though we've had tons of "Whole camp" shots ( e.g. the initial funeral/burial sequence) and we've never seen these people before.
" Lost " is the Big Mac of T.V. , you salivate for it all week , and when you finally get it, it never lives up to its promise, the taste isn't quite as good as you remember, it leaves you unsatisfied , with a slight case of indigestion, and even though you're disappointed, everyone is talking about it for the next few days, so by the time it gets to next week you've forgotten how disappointing it was and you can't wait for the next episode.
Another triumph for Hype over Content.

Well im not sure but Ive heard the writers will introduce more characters to the storyline, these being the survivors who just walk about but we dont know who they are yet.

I think 46 was mentioned late on in Season 1 but now we have to add one for Bernard and lose two for Michael and Walt.
