A few tips: 1) Keep the Coffee cups full, don't let them get past half full. 2) When waiting on a couple, dote on the lady-in the way of pay more attention to her than the man. Don't ignore the man, just a little more attention on the lady. I was told by someone I know-you treat the lady like a queen, and she will want to go back to your restaurant. Also, depending on how good the service is, she can also help determine how good a tip you will get. 3) Please make sure the beverages (soda pop, coffee, water, tea) are kept up. Let them have some privacy to eat, but check on them a time or two or three. 4) Please keep a cheerful, professional attitude, with a touch of good personality.
You will do fine. Enjoy!

Being a waitress is one of the toughest jobs in the world, I think. First and foremost, always make sure you get all the details of the order, then make sure that you place the order to the kitchen correctly. People sure do get mad at you when their food does not come out properly, and your tip will go down. If there is a problem with the food order, immeadiately send a manager to the table.
Second, you must know the menu by heart. That way, you will not be confused when someone asks you a question about an item on the menu. Also, it will make it easier for you to place your order with the kitchen.
Always try to upsell; the more food and drinks you sell, the more your tip will be.
Keep the drinks full, check back often, smile, and wear good shoes.

Besides the basics that Irish Eyes has explained, think about how the customer would want to be treated at your table? What would make their meal special? Then work to make that happen. One last thing, no one tips a crabby waitress, so smile and say hello when they arrive and be happy to serve them during the meal. Besides making your day go faster it will earn you better tips!

From a customer perspective, be warm, nice, and friendly. The important thing is to bring the food when it's ready, don't let it sit and get cold. Do stop by at some point and ask how everything is. And if there's something wrong with, do something about it, rather than just giggle or say "sorry about that." If it can't be fixed see the manager if you can get the customer a discount or freebie.

All good points already given, let me add that mental organization is key !!
And know the menu forward and backward, then you'll never have to waste time to go get an answer to a ridiculous question from a customer all the while neglecting others.
And in time you'll know if you "got it" or you don't.
Good Luck, but it's not for everyone.

Think about how you would want to be treated when you go out to eat. Be as nice as management will let you. As in, a diner will be more laid back than a high-end restaurant. Learn about all the foods and be able to recommend them. Be attentive, but not overbearing. Don't leave any glass empty. SMILE!!!!

when serving a couple don't assume the man is picking up the check
in other words...
be nice to both the man and woman
you never know which one of them is leaving the tip
