Hi~

Do any of you have a suggestion for a "read a-loud" story and activity for a second grade class?

My husband has been invited to be a "mystery reader" but..we don't know what to have him read....*smile*.

Thanks for your help!

Well, you can always go with the classics like Disney books or those short stories.

Disney books: Cinderella, Pochahontas, Fox and the Hound, Dumbo, Mulan, Bambi, Sleeping Beauty, Aladin, Snow White

Well there are short stories like: hansel and gretal, red riding hood, the three little pigs, Goldilocks and the three bears.

What fun! I read to my daughter's second-grade class (it was a while ago, as she's in college now...) and had a GREAT time.

The book I chose was "Everyone Knows What a Dragon Looks Like," a fable by Jay Williams with magnificent paintings by popular children's illustrator Mercer Mayer. It's a BEAUTIFUL book, but it's got a great story about not judging a book by its cover -- or a dragon by its appearance.

Be sure he takes the time to show the illustrations to the kids, they're simply incredible.

...And as I look farther into Amazon, I guess I underestimated the appeal of this book, as used versions are selling for forty bucks! And the Web site for the World's Best Bookstore, Powell's in Portland, Oregon, shows it as not available. Phooey.

So Alibris.com (a used-book networking site) lists several copies, including one for $21. Snap it up!

...Or check your local library. The school might even have a copy.

Read the story "click clack moo: Cows that type" It is a story about cows and a duck that write letters to their farmer. An activity he could do with it is when they are done, have them pretend that they are an animal (it could be their pet or any animal) and have them write a letter to anyone. My 2nd grade class loved this activity. Once they finish, have them share their letters with the class.

Below is the amazon link to the book. You could probably find it at any bookstore.

How about Walter the Farting Dog? It's funny, cute and appropriate.
