Yes. They are pre-screened before they come in. I think that's one of the reason's so many of the terrible singers have such terrible attitudes - they think that, since they made it past the screener, they must be good.

I don't think they get weeded out. They all get a chance to audition, but since there's only a 2 hour time slot for these auditions to be televised, that means that major editing is done. When it's being edited, they usually determine which video clip is going to be a part of the show or if it's not going to make it out of the cutting room.

Yes... A huge number of people are weeded out and only a few of the "good" ones get thru to Paula Simon and Randy... AND for "good" TV, they put some (just a sprinkling!) of the exceptionally crappy thru, too...
