I am planning to claim my live in boyfriend on my taxes as a dependent, he did not work last year. He owes some back child support. Will my return be penalized?

You can not claim your boyfriend as a dependant. However, if you have been living together in a conjugal relationship for a minimum of 12 months or if you have a child together (by birth or adoption), he then qualifies as your common law partner and you will be able to claim a spousal amount for him.

Spousal Amount:

If he lived with you all year, you provided more than half of his support, and he didn't make over $3300, then you can probably claim him if nobody else is. Your refund would not be taken for his back child support. There is of course a much more obvious question of how good a bet this guy is for your future. Something for you to think about. Good luck.

If you declare him as a dependant yes. In fact declaring him on your taxes should place him in the position of being your spouse. Your ex huisband slould be able to use this as a reason to end or reduce supportpoayments because your new common law husband should be supporting you. It is time to quit polishing your crack dealers Harley.

wow. he owes back pay to some one else for a kid, doesn't have a job but lives with you....sounds like he's hitching a free ride.,... does that really sound fair to you?

You will be letting the government know that you are in a common law relationship and you will be treated as you are married. So yeah probably. Dont do it. get rid of his lazy *** too.

Get him to go to or call Revenue Canada and ask if he owes money to them or if ther is a lien on his taxes. They will tell him.
Then tell the lazy ***hole to get a job and help support you and to help support his kids.
