Why do females want a gay friend?

This is a good question. It has been my experience that females befriend me in order to use me as a sounding board with matters that are personal to them. It seems as though they want a mans opinion on a plethora of thing they wouldn't be comfortable asking straight friends of friends in fear that gossip will get around. It is mostly harmless inquiries but on occasion serious issues that need comfort arise. As an example, the most serious thing I've ever done for a straight female was to hold her hand while she had an abortion, and it didn't stop there. There was a great deal of emotional after care that she needed and I was glad to be there for her. Friendships come and go but the memories of what people do for you or to you last a lifetime.

I think the idea is that a gay male friend can be just a friend, without the worry that the relationship might progress into something else. There won't be any unwanted attention (sexually), and perhaps most importantly they won't be a threat.
At least this is how the ideal relationship between gay man/straight woman is perceived. In reality, women usually have friends who happen to be gay, not want friends specifically *because* they're gay.

For some people, gay men get fetishized as the positive stereotype (we can shop together! He can help me buy shoes! We can do makeup and hair...). In essence, they want a pet homosexual, which I find a helluvalot more offensive than your question. Others just don't mind having gay male friends (it does offer a "safe" friend who will never be interested in you romantically, but who can still tell you things from a male perspective).

Gay male friends are the best! They are usually quite hilarious. Plus, you can go to the mall to scope out the hot boys. Most have a great fashion sense, so they're fabulous shopping buddies.

Because we're SAFE, we're not going to JUDGE you, we don't have the "usual" reasons to lie when most peopl do, because what would be the purpose? We're not trying to get in your pants, so lying is stupid. Honesty between friends is always appreciated. We can be totlly creative and upbuilding and helpful. 'nuff said.
