Poverty is the result of lots of things. I don't think you can find a single solution, but here are some of the issues.
1. Education. This is the biggest reason by far for poverty. Lack of education means you will live in poverty for your entire life. When anybody goes to work, they are actually trading an hour of their time for an hour of pay. A person who is educated is worth much more than a person who is not educated. Generally speaking, if every child on the face of the earth went to school and received a high school diploma, 95% of poverty would be wiped out.
2. Epidemics and disease. When an epidemic hits an area of the world, there is usually tremendous loss of life. As a result, the infrastructure for the nation is warped and cannot help in the recovery process.
3. Welfare. People who go to prison become acclimated to jail and change their entire personality. They cannot do anything without supervision and as a result are told when to have a medical checkup, when to have the teeth cleaned, where to go and what to do. People on welfare often take on the same characteristics. It is an awful situation when a family has five generations of children who have never worked a single day in their lives and often never finish school. The laws of the US require a family to have no husband in order to collect maximum benefits, so there is a steady stream of "boyfriends" walking into and out of the children's lives. There is no role model that has a clue on how to exist in the real world. After a while, unless significant steps are taken to help individuals out of this, they will spend the rest of their lives in poverty. They end up being street smart and work the system... but it is an American tragedy that this is allowed to happen.
4. Famine. Weather conditions over a long period of time will cause poverty. No rain for years will change the balance of trade and make countries rely on food aid and imports. That means the real dollars in the country are going out... not coming in.
5. War. Wars leave countries decimated. People come out of the bomb craters and start rebuilding (what else can the survivors do) but they have a lot of work to do to just break even. In the long run, wars stimulate the economy. but wars in third world nations leave the population broken and poor.
6. Corrupt leaders. There are lots of cases in recent years of the leaders sucking all the money out of the nation for their own personal use. You can find many references to nations in ruins as a result of corrupt polititions and rulers.

Poverty is a problem that shows up on the streets everywhere, but there are many solutions to end this.
Solutions: you can help at the shelter homes, donate food clothes or money
I am not sure if you wanted a topic sentence leading to the solution you came up with or like solutions itself.

NASA gets billions upon billions of dollars per year. They don't save lives or make people happy. They fly to Mars. Honorable, but couldn't they just take one, solitary billion--that's a thousand millions--and drive around New York City or an African village and help someone?
