I had it done for both of my deliveries. I lay on my side, bending my back the same way a cat arches her back, exposing all the little knobby bumps of my spine. I had to lie perfectly still, even during a contraction, as they inserted the needle in my back.
There was a small sting, just like a regular shot, and then I could relax or clinch as I wanted.
It made the delivery much easier for me. My kids are now 9 and 12 and doing fine.

Get it Get it Get it Get it, we are not cave women anymore and if this makes childbirth easier-- Go for it, you want to be happy not concerned with the pain. I had Spinal epidurals with both of my deliveries, one word, Awesome. I was so happy I made the decision to have it. With the first one they gave me an epidural drip, that I could administer myself every 10 min, you could actually feel it work. With the second one they only gave me enough to get through the delivery then they remove it. It was the best like I said.
Oh something someone may have never told you, There is no pain (provided that you have a fairly normal delivery) once the baby is out. The delivery of the afterbirth is a major relief of pressure, but no pain. So get the epidural, you will not regret it.

P.S. I was reading the others' experiences and I will say that I would hate to have been at the Hospital they were at, cuz I could still push (my second child came out with 3 pushes no joke 7.2 lbs) I had no problems, I could feel everthing but the pain. There is also something called a walking epidural where you can get up and move so preference is really key.

I have had 3 children first one I did natural, no epidural. The second 2 I used it though. An epidural is a blessing. It helped me to be able to enjoy my birthing experience so much more. It is wonderful. I must have been crazy the first time to not use it. The only part that was bad was when they gave me the shot it didn't work and they had to redo it, not only redo it once but twice. The anesthesiologist said she had only had to give a shot twice to one person in 20 years but never 3 times total. Well I guess there is a first for everything. Not just more medicine, the whole shot 3 times. I just wasn't going numb, I could still lift my legs completely. But finally 3 times the charm, it worked. And let me tell you, I would do it 4 times if I had to, it was still so worth it. Do it, you will enjoy the precess so much more! Good Luck!

I am a mother of 3 ( still cooking one) and I have had both an epidural birth in the hospital and a drug free home birth. I can honestly say that home birth is the better option, but if you are having a hospital birth, try to make it non-medicated. You will never know the need to push, and you will be groggy and drugged up if you have an epidural, limiting the ever important bonding time. True you will feel no pain, but this is not necessarily a good trade off. Non essential interference from the medical industry leads to more non essential interference. Research your options. You have many.

Personally, I had the epidural with my first child and what happened was, the medicine ran out before I delivered him so I had to feel the pain. By the time they put more into it, he was born 20 min later and I could not walk for a few hours. Honestly it scared the $hit out of me and I will NEVER again get the epidural! I am 36 weeks pregnant and I am opting for a morphine drip which takes the edge off the pain, I would rather that than not be able to walk or feel my legs!

mine was painful, they give you a numbing shot before the real shot so you cant feel it.
However I did feel a little bubble blowing up in my back. You have to let them know if you feel it more on one side then the other because it will only work on one side, and it happened to me...I only felt it on the right side, so they turned me to the left so it would flow..
With my luck, the moment I sat down from the epidural, I was dilated to 10 cm. and had to push. So the baby came out and my epidural was just starting. So get it when your about 5...i got mine at 7.
However, the consequence...
that part of my back where the needle was, is the most sensitive in my back. Its been 5 years, and I can still feel the needle point. And it hurts when I reach up or get massaged in that area.

I've done natural (with my 2nd baby) and had an epidural with my 3rd. Personally, I hated it. I had to have it because they induced me with pitocin, which gives you no breaks in between contractions. But I also noticed that when I finally dilated to 10 centimeters, they had to turn the epidural down and wait another hour for the effects to wear down a bit so I could feel myself pushing. What a drag! It took forever. My sister had a water birth, which many hospitals are now advocating. It's soothing for mother and baby and helps women to stave off an epidural sometimes. Either way, you'll make the right decision for you.

I have had 2 I was really scared the first time, because of horror stories if they don't get it right it will paralize you so stay real still and stuff, like that. It was only painful for a second, and then thank the lord all my pain was gone. With my first one it lasted about an hour after I delivered, the hardest part was waiting for it. With my second one almost the same thing except that one of my legs didn't lose feeling, but still covered enought to not feel the actual labor. I say get one, They are a blessing to have, you actually can enjoy the birth! Good Luck

I had an epidural with my first child because things weren't moving as fast as they should. Everything turned out fine but I wouldn't want to have one again. The risks are too great in my opinion to chose one. If the doctors said it was needed of course I would listen. Anyhow I found this page about epidurals so check it out before deciding. It's your choice in the end.

I had one. I'm scarred of needles but when your in labor, any kind of pain medication is a blessing. Make sure you get a good anestesiologist. When I got mine they numbed the spot first with a local anestetic. After that it just felt like someone was puching on my spine with their thumb. The worst part of it actually, was having to stay still while having contractions. You're curled in a tight ball around your stomach and can't move while having it done. The medication kicked in within minutes. A good epidural will take the pain away but will still let you feel the pressure of a contraction. I was able to walk within an hour of having it removed.
