In 1776, its where the Declaration of Independence was written and approved by the Continental Congress. In 1787, the Constitutional Convention wrote the U.S. Constitution. Immediately afterwards, it served as George Washington's White House and I believe the first few Congresses met there too. Then it became a tourist trap forever after.
