In mainstream American society, heterosexuality is MOST definitely a part of the male gender. Doesn't mean it should be, and it doesn't mean that those who break that are somehow "less male", but it does mean that society views them as such. I point to the "sissy" stereotype as Exhibit A. Early "scientific" writings about homosexuals are Exhibit B: lesbian brains, early on, were thought to be the same as men's (they aren't). To counter the problem this would create (wherein lesbians would therefore be seen as "superior"), they were thought to be similar to ethnic minority brains (which were, at the time, viewed as physically inferior). Gotta love this society, right?

None. or at least that's what it SHOULD be.

As an educated society, we know that sexual orientation and gender identity are two completely separate issues.
We know that sexual orientation is not a mental disease or disorder.
We are learning that gender identity also is not a disease or disorder.
We're learning that in fact there are actually more genders than just the pre-set XX and XY chromosomal sets. Science is finding XXY, XYY and also XO to be among the chromosomal gender orders as well.

The more Christianity plays into the society, the more gays are persecuted. The same is true for gender roles. The more strict the role, the less tolerant.

I mention religion because it seems that western settlers who brought the bible also eroded native thoughts on more open expressions of sexuality.

Native Americans, India Indians, Polynesians, etc were all more accepting of being gay than they have become under Western/Christian influences.

I don't think gender roles have anything to do with sexual orientation.

Straight Women do 'men's' jobs.
Straight Men do 'women's' jobs sometimes.
Gay Men play 'straight' sports.

Just depends on the person and what chores need to get done, what job works best for them.
