Since you've asked in the "newborn & baby" category I assume it's either expressed breast milk or formula you are asking about?.
Breast milk should be used within 48 hours. You can freeze it for up to 3 months, but once defrosted use it within 48 hours - don't refreeze it.
With formula I'd allow the same. However, I usually have my clean bottles in the fridge with the boiled water in them ready and put the formula powder in only at feed time. I only give her the remainder if it is used that day. Otherwise I discard it.
Better to be safe than sorry.
Normal milk - yes, like everyone else said, have a smell or taste of it. Milk never lasts that long in our house anyway - we love it.

properly, my milk doese that too. i purchased 2 gallons of milk very last sunday (2/a million) Exp. Date is two/17. From Costco. i became about 0.5 way by the first gallon, and my son and that i spotted the milk became no longer tasting ideal.(2/5). So, I threw it out and opened the different gallon on the prompt. the 2d gallon that I only opened on the prompt does no longer flavor ideal. It tastes some type of chemial or some thing. about 3 day in the past, I checked my refrigerator temp. And it stated the temp. became in the ritht decision at 9 ( sturdy decision was1-10), yet I became the temp. down only in case and the decision went right down to 5, yet lots of vegetables were given frozen at that temp.?in my veg. drawer on the bottom. I only won't be able to figure this out

Cow's milk or breastmilk?? Cow's milk just smells bad, take a sniff. Breastmilk is fine for 48 hours in the fridge, but needs to go after that.

the "use by" date isnt always the thing to go by. If the milk has been opened it can go bad before that date. The best way to tell is to take the top off and smell it. If it has a sour odor than its time to buy a new gallon.

Most milk lasts up to a week after the date on the container but smell it to be sure...if it smells even the slightest bit different...dump it down the drain.
