You most likely meant "Democrat". There is a difference between being Democrat and being democratic.

The differences between Democrats and Republicans are far too many and are not set in stone. In today's world it could be summed up in a few topics and the general belief.
Taxes - Republicans believe in lower taxes to stimulate economic growth. Democrats believe higher taxes are needed to continue to support social entitlement programs.
Abortion - Republicans believe abortion should be illegal or very limited, that a child's parents be informed if their child is requesting an abortion. Democrats believe abortion is a basic right that should not be limited in any form or fashion, that it should also be publicly funded and available to all women, no matter what age or stage of pregnancy they are.
Capital punishment - Republicans believe the death penalty can serve as a deterrent for future violent crimes. Democrats believe the death penalty is a violation of human rights.

There are many other topics, and certainly NOT all Republicans or Democrats have this set of ideas.

Democrats believe in socialism. If you and I worked for our money and a third party came along and didn't earn any of it, a democrat would make us give that person some of it. Republicans believe that the money that we are earned is our money.
Democrats believe that we should have government making our decisions, and a bigger government as well, with this, higher taxes and more social programs. They also don't believe in business.
Although it doesn't seem that way now a days, Republicans generally like smaller governments. But they generally believe the opposite what the democrats believe in. That's why there is so much bi-partisanship

it is exciting to verify all of the countless solutions to this question. it variety of feels the two events are having an identity disaster. I stay in Repub territory, and disagree with with the person-friendly philosophy generally, yet do not evaluate myself a bona fide Dem the two. I especially do not purely like the implication that while you're a Christian, you should be a Republican. Or in case you think in family members values you won't be able to be a Democrat. in case you think too many generalizations, or hear to too lots rhetoric from the two element, it ought to have your head spinning. Repubs signify vast business enterprise, Dems help social and environmental classes. the middle classification has to come to a decision which party will help them maximum interior a given historic time. the two events are obligated to whoever contributes the main to their campaigns. So, you ought to look at not purely person-friendly philosophies, yet who's conserving the puppet/handbag strings. BTW, birdsnakecat's answer is prevalent crap spouted by using neo con Republicans of the relatively hateful persuasion. purely as many Democrats are stressful working and pay taxes, so what he says is a fallacy.

I usually vote democratic, but I am willing to listen to a republican. As it happens the two parties are almost two sides of the same coin. they work to the extremenists and cater to the money. We have got to change our system so that the gold does not make all the rules.

It was best summed up for me in a joke I once heard -

It seems that a Republican father was trying to explain the virtues of conservatism to his very liberal Democratic daughter. She had just come home from college, and was talking about both her grades, and the grades of her roommate.

She said, "I'm getting a 3.0 this semester, but my roommate, she's getting a 1.0, and she's upset with me about it." Her father said, "Well, since you favor the Democrat liberal ideals, why not take 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your roommate, then you'll both have 2.0's, and you'll both be happy."

Well, this did not sit well with his daughter at all. "WHAT?? Give a full point of my GPA to that BUM?!? I was in the library 4 hours every night (even Saturdays), studying my butt off...she was out partying, drinking, and doing God knows what else....why should someone who did absolutely NOTHING all semester be rewarded by someone like me, when I earned it, and she didn't?!?"

Her father just smiled, and said, "Honey, welcome to the Republican Party."

Democrats believe in economic regulation to even the playing field, and social freedom.

Republicans believe in economic freedom, and social regulation for 'moral' reasons.

Traditionally, Republicans favored cutting government spending and balancing the budget, but that has been totally flushed down the toilet in the last 7 years.

The Democrats care about the common man. The Republicans cater to the rich. If you're rich - you're a Republican. If you're a common, ordinary working person - chances are you're a Democrat. Republicans also make their appeals to the red-necked "good old boys" and the lunatic religious fringe. The Democrats care about minorities such as LEGAL immigrants, Blacks and so on - when was the last time a Republican did anything for someone who was Black?

The GOP used to be a great party led by smart guys like Barry Goldwater -- Intellectuals were respected and faith-based politicians were rightly seen as dangerous radicals -- until the ultra-right wing overtook it in the 1980's. Now it's the complete opposite. Once in a rare while you get an Olympia Snowe or a Robert Dole, but most of these guys are little better than snake-oil salesmen (Tom Delay), and even more shocking in this day and age, complete cowards when it comes to military service (George Bush, Dick Cheney, etc)

This is not to say that the Democratic party hasn't had it's fair share of lousy presidents (Jimmy Carter), embarrassing old geezers (Tip O'Neill, Ted Kennedy, and Robert Byrd), and shrill liberals completely out of touch with reality (Jesse Jackson, Bella Abzug, Jerry Brown). We do however have tough people who actually care about their fellow man & woman (Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Jordan, Ann Richards, et al) and stand by their convictions (Al Gore) even in the face of outrageous attacks on their character (John Kerry).

Democrats believe in good intent.
Republicans believe in results.

See any problem we have and the solutions offered. You will always find this true.

Evidently there is no difference they like to make promises and then do what they want. They all lie. We will never get the chance to vote in a real American because most Americans can't afford to spend the amount of money required to run for office, frankly I'm sick to death of both parties. It's all just a bunch rich ***** who are out of touch with average Americans it's truly sad. And we are all stuck here to be subject to their whims. Don't get me wrong I love my country I'm just sick of the political BS! And evidently from reading the other comments made none of us really no what the hell is going on.
