I want to go into this field b/c I'm really interested in the patent process as well as protecting trademarks, since I've been in the side of creating them. If I get a great LSAT scored, will I have a shot at getting in with my current degree? My College GPA was 3.56 and I graduated with honors and distinction.

You definitely have a shot at getting into law school -- obviously, it just depends on what school you want to go to (you probably won't get into Harvard, but if you get above 166ish then you'll probably have a good shot at a school like GW).

A good site that you might want to check out is www.lawschoolnumbers.com. Recent applicants can put their LSAT and GPA into the site, as well as the schools they've applied to and their admission results, so that future applicants can see what other applicants stats are. I found it helpful when I was doing the application process.

It's also important to know that to become licensed as a patent attorney you have to take 2 separte bar exams -- the standard bar exam and the patent bar. however, this is not my field of specialization so i can't swear that it's the case in every state.

good luck!

Getting in to law school shouldn't be a problem.

The problem is patent law falls under intellectual property. The firms that deal in that usually require you to have some sort of technical degree (a degree in math or science or engineering). Patent law is a little more loose in that requirement, but often not.

You're going to have to take as many IP classes as you can in law school and do whatever you can to get experience in that field. I'd actually try and get some kind of internship now at a law firm or company that deals with patents. You've got a summer before law school. Or, do a part time thing now. Forget about being paid. Just get that experience from whoever will take you.

If your LSAT score is as close to the perfect number your chances are high.. But it also depends on the type of college you are applying to. For example, if you want to apply to Harvard,, you need to have something more than that.. Because most kids applying to harvard have 4.0 GPAs along with other activities.. You should get involved in volunteering or something like that to build your resume.
