If I plug in a power supply to the motherboard, turn it on, and no LED light comes on... could it be because the motherboard is improperly grounded to the case?

IF you think it may be grounded incorrectly (happens if you install a motherboard and forget a few standoffs before screwing in the motherboard), then the only way to be sure is remove the motherboard from the case, remove the power supply as well, and hook the two up and power on. If things buzzs and beeps, you have found your culprit. However, in the case of no lights, no fans, no nothing, you are probably getting zero power to the motherboard, grounded improperly or not. I have put in a motherboard incorrectly and grounded the back of the board to the case, but usually you will still get a power light, a spinning fan, somthing, but it is possible.

Give it a shot if you don't want to spring for a new powersupply or motherboard, but chances are....somehing has gone kaput

No. The power connector has more than one ground wire. The most likely cause is a motherboard blow by improper anti-static precautions. If you check the power connector with a voltmeter you should see 5 volts on one of the wires, even with the computer off. That means the power supply is probably good.

If you properly hook up your power supply to your motherboard and you get no LED light it usually means the power supply switch is not on or the power supply is defective or even the motherboard could be defective.
