People who heat their houses and run their hot water heaters with "natural gas" are actually using a mixture of mostly methane with a small admixture of ethane and maybe propane. The gas companies strip out most of the ethane, propane, butane, and other natural gas liquids (NLG's), but eave enough of the ethane in to boost the BTU value to what's needed. People who live in trailers use propane. People who light cigarettes use butane. People who drive cars need a shot of pentane in the gasoline to start up.
