The fighting on the Somme was between Germany (on one side) and the French & British Armies (including Empire troops from Australia, New Zealand and Canada) on the other side. Sporadic fighting on the Somme was pretty much continuous throughout the 1914-18 war, though the actual Battle of the Somme began on 1st July 1916 and ended following the final battle of The Ancre (Nov18/19 1916) when the winter weather set in and fighting on a large scale was no longer practical.
