It is amazing what lasers can do today. Look at the scanners at the grocery or any other store. It doesn't make any difference what direction the stamp is placed, upside down or whatever. If it is not recognized as a real stamp it gets kicked out down the line and is identified by hand. The computer system at USPS is very sophisticated. It reads all types of hand writing and almost, but when all else fails, it still takes a human. But they only look at a very small percentage.
