depends on your furnish or heating system.

With many systems its actually cheaper leaving it on at a lower constant then raising it up several times throughout the day.

I had a oil furnish that the optimal temp setting to save the most money was keeping it at a constant 60-65 anything above would use up all the oil quickly and lowering it to 30 or off and then raising it up again caused the same effect.

Turning your unit off and back on will cost you much more.
When you are heating (or cooling), you are not just heating or cooling the air around you but you are also heating or cooling: the walls and ceiling, your furniture, everything, including your self.

Leave your temperature set to a desired temperature and leave it alone.

dependent on the outside temperature, but I think leaving it on low is going to cost more.
