Start with the formula for Zinc oxide – that ZnO

So if you start with zinc metal, you write out the balanced chemical equation

Zn(metal) + ½ O2(gas) => ZnO

Notice that because oxygen gas is diatomic, it only takes half as much oxygen to convert a given amount of zinc metal.

So what is the answer?
