His life was full of remarkable achievements and he was the first in history who was called great.
Alexander (Greek “ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΣ” (ALEXANDROS) is considered the greatest hero of Greece (and he is still vied as a sacred icon in Greece).
The most important achievement of Alexander was the fact that he spread Greek culture and language!
Alexander managed to unite the Greek states under his powerful command. He made an incredible campaign for 10 years and won every battle he fought!
But he was not seen as a conqueror from the enslaved nations of the Persian empires! Instead he was considered as a liberator!
As I mention above the most important achievement was the spreading of the Greek culture. But not by force! Instead he fused Greek cultures with Asian elements creating a New Greek civilization which was later called Hellenistic.
He founded nearly 70 Greek cities (most of them called Alexandria) and the most important of them was Alexandria of Egypt, the center of Greek culture mainly because of its library!
Greek language became so dominant that as a result the Old Testament was translated in Greek and the New Testament was written directly in Greek! And that was the main reason for their fast spreading.
The Greek states became so powerful that, although the constant wars between them, they controlled the known word for 300 years.
The Greek influence was so strong that even the Romans although they were conquers they were heavily influenced and their culture was called Greek/Roman.
"...he (Alexander) inflicted punishment on the Persians for their outrages on all the Greeks, and how he delivered us all from the greatest evils by enslaving the barbarians and depriving them of the resources they used for the destruction of the Greeks, pitting now the Athenians and now the Thebans against the ancestors of these Spartans, how in a word he made Asia subject to Greece."
(Polybius, Book IX, 34, 3)
As a conclusion we can say that with out Alexander the Greek civilization would have never became so powerful and with out the Greek world the western civilization would have never existed!
{Do not confuse the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia or Macedon with the modern state of Makedonija (or FYROM or Slav Macedonia as they are not related at all). The confusion has started a few years ago because that small state started to use the name “Republic of Macedonia” causing a great confusion with real Macedonia in Greece.}

he is the only single person in history to conquer the entire known world at that time. he then spread his culture to them by building libraries and cities named Alexandria. (theres 9 of them in 9 different countries today)
he also spread culture of other lands back to Europe, especially spices which will be important in the 1500's when the Portuguese try to find a way to improve their food, they go and colonize a port in India because of the stories of Alexander

He conquered the world as it was then! The empire he built was the largest ever seen. He was also known to be a briliant leader, warrior, and general.
